Changing the locks on a new home
Should you change the locks on a new home? Short answer: yes. It’s one of the most important things to do when you move in, and it’s quicker and cheaper than most people expect.

Why it matters
You don’t know how many keys exist. Previous owners, tenants, cleaners, neighbours, builders and estate agents may all have had one, and none of them are on your inventory. Changing the cylinders takes every old key out of use the same day.
What to change first
- Front and back door cylinders: usually a like-for-like swap, done in minutes.
- Upgrade uPVC and composite doors to TS 007 3-star anti-snap cylinders.
- Check timber doors have a five-lever mortice deadlock to BS 3621, the standard most insurers name.
- Garage, side gate and any internal door to an annex or garage.
- Window locks: make sure you have keys for every one.
Check your insurance
Many home insurance policies set minimum lock standards. If your locks fall short and you’re burgled, a claim can be reduced or refused. A free LockFit security check compares your doors against common insurer requirements.
A new home is the one time you can be sure who holds the keys. Make it you.
